We can all agree that overthinking is exhausting. When you overthink, thoughts run circles in your head, and you find yourself stuck, unable to create content. You then start to come up with outlandish ideas that contradict each other.

Stop overthinking your content.

You might find it hard to believe but content doesn’t have to be perfect to perform well. The time you spend analyzing and thinking about what you want to do could be better spent putting out content and seeing what happens. Overthinking your content is counter-productive, stressful, and debilitating.

Signs of overthinking.

People who overthink feel like they can’t turn off their brains. They are constantly second-guessing and evaluating, so much so that they often can’t make decisions.

  • You second guess everything.
  • You analyze and analyze and analyze again.
  • You catastrophize or expect the worst.
  • You hate making decisions.
  • You take things personally.
  • You’re a perfectionist.
  • You criticize yourself a lot.
  • You can’t turn your brain off.

If you find yourself overthinking, ask yourself these questions.

  • What is the worst that can happen? Letting your mind race to the worst probable outcome is often a waste of time. What is the worse that can happen? Nothing, people don’t read your blog, no one clicks your link, no one goes to your stream. Not exactly devastating. Your ego might get bruised, but you’ll survive. Keep making content and good things will happen.
  • Are you afraid of backlash? Remember that any feedback is good, use the knowledge to find your audience. Don’t be afraid to dissuade the wrong people because you will find the right people, which are the ones you can relate to and who will align with your brand values and be strong followers and supporters.
  • Do you lack resilience? Resilience is your ability to recover from a setback. Remember if something goes bad, in most cases, it just means that your content will have little to no engagement and be forgotten. As you develop resilience, you can move forward, learn and create more content that will resonate with your audience.

How to stop overthinking content.

Identify the content you can create:

You need to identify and commit to one or two types of content that you can work with and keep up with to get started. That could be audio, video, photo, writing or graphics, etc.

Find the platforms you know how to use and can maintain on a regular basis:

It’s almost impossible to find the time to be active on every social media platform. You need to identify your audience, choose the best social media platform for your content and focus on releasing content on there. You then want to pick one larger content piece such as a video blog, a podcast, streaming, written blog to name a few, and release content regularly. Start small and grow as you feel comfortable.

Create a Content Calendar:

Having a calendar allows you to write down when and where you plan to publish upcoming content. The easiest way to execute this is to plan 1 day per week or month that you plan all your content. Having the calendar guiding you will take the guesswork out of it. Having a plan and staying organized will help with your overthinking how you will get your content out and when.

Repurpose your content:

Repurposing your content has a number of benefits. It can help you reach new audiences and makes the most of your efforts. You should always create content with repurposing in mind. For example, if you create a blog post, you can use pieces of it elsewhere to help promote it or just to have content on other platforms.

When it comes to content creation, it’s very easy to overthink things, there are so many options and so much data/analytics available to us. You have to do what’s best for your brand. Know the signs of overthinking and know what you can do about it. Understand that as a content creator, you are made to roll with the punches. Stop overthinking and go out and create content.
